So, Here We Find Ourselves Again

June 7, 2020June 7, 2020 ~ Austin Gravley ~ Leave a comment

In the summer of 2010, I started my very first blog, Another Ascending Lark. For the next four years I would write often on apologetics, theology, personal events, and anything else that felt like writing about. I would also write a ton of music reviews, and in 2014 I pivoted Another Ascending Lark from being … Continue reading So, Here We Find Ourselves Again

Death and the Digital Spell

August 1, 2019June 6, 2020 ~ Austin Gravley ~ Leave a comment

Sunday, June 9th, 2019 was a day of joy that instantly gave way to deep grief. In the morning, I went to church. In James 4:13-17, we find a brief excursus on those who seek to make plans for business and future profit and how the brevity of life ought to temper the confidence in our planning. It’s very likely that James has Ecclesiastes in mind in here, not only because of his conclusion that we are “mists that appear for a little time and then vanishes”, but also because of Ecclesiastes 1:3 and Solomon’s particular use of an obscure Hebrew word.
“Hebel hebel’iym, hebel hebel’iym; ha’kol hebel”. Five of the first “words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem” are the same word, and through a brilliant mastery of the Hebrew language Solomon wants to let his readers know the canvas he will be painting on will be one of vapors and mists. No matter what other shades or colors Solomon chooses to paint with, it cannot be disconnected from these first five words and the conclusion that “everything is vanity”.
This is the last of the “introductory” posts I will write on Ecclesiastes before diving into the text itself, and before I do that a brief word needs to be said on how one ought to read this book. Much of the misunderstanding, confusion, and aversion of Ecclesiastes comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of what kind of book Ecclesiastes is and how one ought to read it.
